Instead of Going Off The Wall, Ken Belson documents in The Rooftop Garden Climbs Down a Wall
(Business of Green, NY Times, Nov 18) the works of Kari Elwell Katzander, a New York landscape designer.
Her company Mingo Design has created Green Walls for individuals and companies alike.
A large scale project was the Greening of the PNC Bank building in Pittsburgh (picture below, from her site).
She credits Calder as an inspiration in this case.
One thing that Ken Belson' s article highlights that I did not realize is that Vertical Walls can be used for more than their contribution to air quality, insulation, noise reduction to name a few positive points that I noted earlier when I wrote about Patrick Blanc and his Vertical Gardens (December 06).
They can also be used to grow fruits, vegetables and herbs.
Will many Urban Chefs adopt the idea?
