Don't ask me why the great piece by Carolyn Lyons (FT, February 21) titled Basically, better in print becomes the slightly bland Neighbourhood-style dining in LA in the web version.
The places she puts the spotlight on are going back to basics, taking the fuss out of the equation.
Have we not had enough of verbose menus who pile up trendy ingredients rather than imagination and taste?
Fun has its place with Kogi which offers meals on wheels and Twitter.
They dish out Korean Barbecue such as the Short Ribs above served in Mexican wrappings out of a truck found most evenings around happening spots around Los Angeles.
Price is perfect for our Consumed to Thrifty times if the $2 Taco, $5 Burrito tag mentioned by Carolyn is still in place.
According to their litterature all tacos are served with
- sesame-chili salsa roja
- julienne romaine lettuce and cabbage tossed in Korean chili-soy vinaigrette
- cilantro-green onion-lime relish
- crushed sesame seeds
- sea salt
- garnished with lime wedge, orange wedge and red radish wedge
The culinary mind behind Kogi is Roy Choi who co-founded the venture with Mark Manguera and Caroline Shin-Manguera.
They broadcast their location du jour via Twitter.
Correct me if I am wrong but it seems that they take Sundays and Mondays off.
If you are not geeky enough to use Twitter, you can find their weekly schedule on Kogi's Site.
Paying it a visit, I actually found out that the Kogi team is taking over a brick and mortar location, the Alibi Room. The grand opening is on February 24th….
They like to stir a little controversy by showcasing the Meat is Murder t-shirt (from Stu for TypeTees).
Is there any connection to The Smiths?
Do you know any other restaurants that move around town and use Twitter to share their daily location or just use it to keep their fans updated on specials, new menus and events?
Let us know if you do.
