How many '10 Years in the Making Overnight Sensations' have you met?
Taking in Now for My Next Trick, I'll Turn Brand into Cash by Sarah Lacy (January 3, 2009) brought back to mind The Brand Called You by Tom Peters for Fast Company.
I had to check twice that the Tom Peters piece was really published 11 years ago, in December 1997.
Getting back to Sarah Lacy, she outlines how easy it is to get intoxicated by success and how despite starting the year with a grand plan of connecting the disparate parts of her work persona (books, magazines, blog, etc…) many people know her work in certain areas while ignoring others.
She reminds us that spending your time obsessing on how many people are your online friends, quote your stuff and the status of your page views could end up being a distraction.
Running a popularity contest is no substitute for plowing your field.
Of course slow and steady is not an American trait, we want instant results and instant gratification.
While I weave my web day after day (more like an ant than a spider), the connection between the disparate parts is not always evident.
Does it have to be connected or can it just be complementary?
Can things happen in iterations, constantly evolving?
