Big Apple finally gets its Fete de la Musique, Make Music New York, June 21

It took 26 years for New York City to get its own Fete de La Musique event. Under the banner of Make Music New York, the Big Apple finally joins some 300 other cities around the globe who for a day at least (June 21 for most events) celebrate music in all its shapes and forms and it's all free.

Get a taste of the sounds on display thanks to the Time Out-Make Music New York Calendar.
It lists concerts by neighborhoods and in alphabetical order. Not all the links work and it would have bee n helpful if they highlighted  some of the bands and musicians in various styles but hey, it is only their first year so let's cut them some slack.

A few things I picked from the program:

Aaron Shragge “The subtle sound of the Shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) mixed with north Indian Raga bathed in ambient textures, that also include melancholy trumpet and vocal sounding lap steel guitar.” World West Village (Manhattan) Winston Churchill Square, Carmine St (at Bleecker St) 8:00pm 10:00pm

Alash Ensemble  Discover Tuvan Throat Singing with the Alash Ensemble...Chelsea (Manhattan) Rubin Museum of Art, 150 W 17th St (between 6th Ave and 7th Ave) Noon 1:00pm

Barra Libre  Mentioning The Clash and Mano Negra amongst its influences, Barra Libre is described as  Marriachi-Punk Funk and plays in Chelsea (Manhattan) 23rd St (at 5th Ave) 6:00pm 7:30pm

Look at it as a cocktail party with finger food, taste all the flavors you like...after all it's free.

Bonne Chance!

On Productivity Porn, Marc Andreessen and 'A Year to Live'

Jun 18
A book I was given yesterday, Find More Time by the aptly named Laura Stack brought the Productivity Porn subject back to mind. I started browsing through the opus and all I could see was numbers and charts, Well I exaggerate there are words too. How can any book tell me how to run my days and my life? Can we control everything that happens to us? Why do we think we can cram more...
