A Cookie or a Pair of Socks for your Birthday, Does it Make you Feel Special?

As the credit crunch hits the bottom line of many stores, eateries and other businesses, everyone starts looking for ways to save money.
Say in these uncertain times a place where you are a good customer decided to reward you on your birthday with a cookie or a cheap pair of socks would you feel special or rather that they treated you on the cheap?
If you cannot give freebies anymore as a business owner, is giving nothing better than looking like a cheapskate?
