If it was not for a bench near the London School of Economics, there might never have been a Lonely Planet as it is where Tony and Maureen Wheeler met in 1970 according to Two's a company (FT, Business Education, December 09).
This gives a new meaning to what a benchmark is.
Would you imagine many current MBA graduates hitting the road for a year of adventures around the world as Tony did back then with his wife?
Besides their adventures in publishing, Tony Wheeler's 10 Recipes for Success are worth a read.
Let me mention three:
2) Starting is all that matters
5) Loosing money is not always bad: "People come to us for the big destinations because they're impressed that we even get to the small ones."
8) Make work as much fun as possible
To keep with that last point, I thought the picture below of a London Bench in early spring in St. James's Park with Buckingham Palace in background for Dull Men Council by Ben Tsiter would be perfect.
