The New Yorker versus Nihonjin series bring together New York and Japanese artists to discuss issues in their field and beyond at the Japan Society in New York.
Next installment on Thursday, March 19, 2009 brings together Steve Reich, the minimalist composer and Nobukazu Takemura, a Japanese musician and remix master.
Since I did not know his work, I went looking.
Born in 1968, Nobukazu Takemura got hooked on music in the early days of Punk, had a DJ period then turned to remixes and his own projects. Some of his releases could be considered trip hop jazz or electronica. He also wrote soundtracks for Cartoon Network shows.
I chose the video for his song Sign (above) as a vignette of the man's work.
Starting at 6:30 pm, the discussion will be moderated by John Schaefer, host and producer of WNYC's radio program New Sounds and is followed by a reception.
Tickets:
