I am not sure I would feel comfortable riding a bike around Manhattan what with potholes, crazy cabs and the rest.
Some parts of New York might make the cut though.

The recently launched Ride the City helps you find the best bicycle route between 2 points. It might not be the shortest but it tries to offer the safest by locating routes that maximize the use of bike lanes and green ways.

In case your encounter mechanical problems, Ride the City also indicates Bike Shops along the road chosen.

On my recent train trips to New York including this morning, I have noticed people with folding bikes.

Since this is a brand new service, you might encounter problems using it at times.

I was not able to access the site on Sunday for example.
